Motorola edge 30 is the new advanced midrange that mixes ergonomics at very high levels with a weight of about 150 grams and software very close to the stock version of Android 12. It is difficult to recommend a different smartphone for around 400 euros.
Motorola Edge 30 was touted as the world’s thinnest 5G smartphone. Thanks to the 6.79mm profile, it is one of the latest generation devices with the best ergonomics. Still, in our opinion, the peculiarities of this device are many, including the excellent 144Hz OLED display and Dolby Atmos audio. And the Snapdragon 778G processor, not forgetting the 50 MP rear camera. Is it the best buy under € 400? Maybe, but unfortunately, only for May.

Thanks to its reduced thickness, the Motorola edge 30 is configured as a smartphone for those who hate the market trend that increasingly goes towards heavy and bulky devices. The smartphone, therefore, combines a 6.5-inch diagonal display with Full HD + resolution to a small form factor, sacrificing a little of the characteristics of the integrated battery: that of the new Motorola midrange is “alone” 4.020mAh with support to the 33W TurboPower 30 recharge.
Fascinating are the characteristics of the rear camera, which can show off two 50 MP sensors for the main one with an OIS stabilized f / 1.8 lens) and for the ultra-wide-angle camera with a 114 ° field of view. A dedicated module for depth effects has a 2 MP sensor and f / 2.4 lens. Motorola Edge 30 also records 4K at 30fps and features a 32 MP front camera.

Ergonomics are compromised, but the device is still comfortable holding and using.
How’s The Motorola Edge 30 Doing?
Motorola Edge 30 must be purchased for several reasons: optimal performance for everyday activities, excellent fluidity, dimensions, and low weight compared to the trends of the category, and all this is combined with a user experience from “stock Android.” It could be defined in short as a Xiaomi Mi 11 Lite 5G with a pure Android experience, and this could already be enough for those who do not particularly appreciate interfaces. The aesthetics are also charming, with an exquisite matte finish on the back, interrupted by the photographic module discreetly presented on the upper left part of the device.
Android 12 is present at the first start with all the features that Google has designed for its operating system and the new stylistic language Material You, which allows you to choose a base color used throughout the interface and compatible apps. The customization of the interface elements, however, takes place through the Moto app, where the user can choose several themes and different editable elements: layout, fonts, colors, icon shapes, sounds, display size, font size, and system theme (whether light, dark or automatic).
All these customizations can be accomplished from a single decidedly intuitive screen, which gives free rein to the user in terms of creativity and allows you to choose a much greater number of customizations than the simple stock of Android. As we had seen on Edge 30 Pro, the Home is slightly modified compared to the stock, with a different clock widget and the possibility of getting rid of the Google search bar.
To access all the apps, just a swipe upwards, while the notification center – which as usual, can be called up with a swipe downward – acquires the stylistic characterization typical of Android 12. We can quickly change the display’s brightness and access the quick toggles. At the same time, the Settings, very well organized, include the Privacy Dashboard, where you can monitor what the various apps are doing with the integrated sensors. Among the typical Motorola additions in terms of functionality, we find two:
- ThinkShield is a series of hardware and software features that help improve the security of the data in the terminal, with protection against malware, phishing, and other typical threats on mobile.
- Ready For, a platform (wireless or wired) that allows you to connect your smartphone to another platform and enable specific features: we can connect it to a TV with the Miracast standard to view content on the larger screen, make video calls on the TV, or use your smartphone as if it were remote control. It can also be connected to a Windows 10 or 11 computer through a dedicated app.
Motorola Edge 30 can optimize the performance of running apps through QuickStart, and there are the RAM Extension, and Video Call Effects features that we had seen on the flagship. There is no shortage of new Gestures, which allow, for example, the possibility of dividing the screen between two applications by swiping to the left and then to the right in the center of the display. All with the fluidity and responsiveness typical of stock Android, despite the hardware being not top of the range.
Furthermore, the performance of all antennas is excellent, both as regards Wi-Fi connectivity (also compatible with the latest generation 6 protocol) and as follows the signal of the cellular network (the integrated modem is the Snapdragon X53 5G, with support to mmWave). At the same time, haptic feedback is less potent than other more expensive devices. The audio sector, compatible with Dolby Atmos, is also of excellent quality, thanks to an audio rich in bass even at high volumes. The fingerprint sensor is under glass, positioned perhaps slightly too low, but still quite reactive in unlocking the terminal.
Under the body, we find the Snapdragon 778G processor with support for next-generation 5G networks, combined in our market with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage space. Built with 6nm technology at its core features an octa-core Kryo 670 CPU with four high-performance Cortex-A78 cores configured at 2.4GHz, and four power-saving Cortex-A55 seats, all paired with one GPU. Adreno 642L. The perceived performance is exceptionally high in everyday activities. Still, it is clear that with the heavier applications (see the latest generation games), there are significant differences compared to the more expensive top of the range.
Display
Motorola has implemented a 144Hz refresh rate display in its edge 30, an atypical choice in this market segment. The panel adopts AMOLED technology and is characterized by the 6.5-inch diagonal with a Full HD + resolution, equal to 2400×1080 pixels in this case. This is a good quality panel, excellent if we consider the list price at which the smartphone is sold. The user can set the refresh rate in three ways, explained as follows:
- Automatic: Uses the artificial intelligence system always to show the optimal refresh rate
- 60Hz – Less fluid but ideal for longer battery life
- 144 Hz: maximum fluidity but higher battery consumption
The panel also supports a touch sampling rate of 360Hz and supports HDR10 + encoding for high dynamic range content. In our tests, we measured maximum luminance of 685 nits in strong ambient light conditions, while in manual, the brightness can be pushed up to a maximum of 500 nits. Other smartphones – even of the same market range – do a little better in this area with edge 30 that can be seen discreetly in the sunlight.
Battery Life
Motorola has sacrificed the battery to have such a sophisticated design, reduced thickness, and practically anachronistic weight on edge 30. With a built-in 4020mAh battery, it can’t work miracles, but it still manages to carry its user until the evening with regular use. Charging at night is still essential daily, and with massive use, a recharge before dinner is required: from 0 to 100%, a little more than an hour is needed, thanks to the 30W fast charge.
Not as lightning-fast as on other models but more than satisfactory with a minimum of organization to never run out of smartphones. In our autonomy test in Wi-Fi navigation, we totaled an overall result of 730 minutes, lower than many of the models we tested in recent years (in the graph, you will find only the most relevant). With a 4,020mAh battery, you can’t aspire to much more.
